So you want to make a home library? Great idea! Here's some things to remember:
1. Think about how many bookcases you need.
Here's how to get the right amount of books for the right amount of shelves: First, you want to measure the width of each of your shelves. Say that it is 30 inches long. If on average, each of your books is one inch long, and for every bookcase, you have five shelves, you would multiply thirty by five, resulting in about 150 books per bookcase. Now, think to yourself, is that too much? If it is, as you're shopping for things for your library, pick out some books as well. If you have more books than that, try the equation again, and figure out how many bookcases you need.
2. What kind of furniture do you want to use?
There are many different themes for a library. If you want it to be rustic, you can do rusted metal wall art, sanded wood shelves and tables, and an old fashioned rug. Each theme has a different type of furniture. You don't want to mix a bright cherry shelf with a glided throne-like rustic chair, or it will look a bit weird.
3. What color combinations do you like?
This kind of goes with the last question. Again, if you want a rustic look, you can do tan walls. Blue and gray come together really well for a library. Gray and brown come together really well too. Even brown and mustard yellow looks really nice.
With these questions, you can make a perfect home library for your needs and for others as well.
